Piedmont Together holds successful equity summit

  • 12/12/2014

On December 4th, Piedmont Together held "Building Bridges To A Stronger Economy," an equity summit that followed Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughn's poverty summit which took place earlier this year. The summit brought together over 160 individuals from across the Piedmont Triad who heard from a variety of speakers and created equity action teams.

Sarita Turner and Dr. Michael McAfee of PolicyLink presented and discussed the Equitable Growth Profile of the Piedmont Triad and encouraged attendees to take collective action to make the region more equitable. Following the keynote presentation, a panel of community leaders representing The Aviation Academy at Andrews High School, GTCC, TIMCO Aviation Services, Circles Winston-Salem, and the City of Lexington addressed equity issues and potential solutions that are already taking place in the Piedmont Triad. Aviation education and career pathways were of particular importance.

At the end of the summit, attendees were given the opportunity to vote on equity focus areas they found to be most important for the region. The focus areas chosen were growing good jobs, increasing access to opportunity, and building education and career pathways. Three equity action teams were formed that will develop strategic actions regarding the focus areas. These strategic actions will be presented at Piedmont Together's follow-up summit scheduled for April 2, 2015 in Winston-Salem, NC.
